Systems analysts use information and communication
technologies (ICT) to help companies work faster and more efficiently. They
investigate a problem and then design or adapt a computer system to improve the
operation of the company.
In many ways, systems analysts work as closely with people
as they do with computers. At the beginning of a project, they talk to computer
users and administrators to learn about the existing problems and objectives
that the company wants to achieve by investing in a new or improved system.
For example, a company may want to reduce costs or increase
the speed or scale of production.
- · Systems analysts conduct a detailed study of the company, its procedures and the needs of the people who use its systems. Analysts gather information by talking with staff of all categories within the organization.
- · They then use this information to design a computer system (or several systems) that meets the needs of the company. Then, they write a system specification, describing the operation of the new system, or the new equipment or software that the company wants to buy, as well as the level of training of the personnel it needs.
- · Once the company has approved the system, the analyst begins working closely with ICT specialists, system designers and programmers to create the system.
- · System analysts often update or redesign an old system instead of introducing a completely new one.
- · Analysts could be involved in the planning or execution of the introduction of the new system, and in the training of users, as well as in the drafting of user manuals.
- · When the project is finished, analysts carefully examine the new system to ensure that it fulfills its functions and that users are satisfied with it.
- · Although systems analysts usually have an office from which they work, they sometimes have to travel to visit users in their companies. They could also travel to meet with representatives of the companies that supply equipment.
- · In some companies, an analyst may be responsible for the entire needs analysis process, the design of an appropriate system, writing and program development.
